Irish Moss Pearlwort Sagina Subulata is a luxuriant, evergreen, perennial ground cover plant native to Europe. Irish Moss seeds are very tiny, so it is better to start the seeds in starter flats or pots and transplant the seedling later to the garden spacing the plants 6-9 inches apart. Also called Heath Pearlwort, this evergreen, moss-like perennial grows only 1-2 inch tall featuring lush, emerald-green foliage and forming a compact, dense mat. Irish Moss blooms in spring and summer with small, star-shaped white flowers.

Irish Moss Pearlwort can be planted as a ground cover or lawn substitute, and when planted in mass the growing Irish Moss creates the effect of a moss-covered meadow. Sagina Subulata seeds have to be just pressed into the soil, and Irish Moss adapts to sun or shade (preferable in the South) and requires moisture retentive, gritty, well-drained soil. Irish Moss is praised for its lovely color between flagstones or spilling over rocks in rock gardens or walls, and the plant spreads rapidly to form a carpet that looks especially nice against gray stone. Heath Pearlwort has a soft, lush feel and appearance, and the plant will take light foot traffic when planted between stepping-stones.
